Flames and jets aren't that far apart in the standings and are even sharing some struggles in similar categories like a power-play. However as teams their trajectories are different. Expectations are higher in the Peg and I think they would have figured that they'd be turning the corner by now. Not taking two steps back. Flames on the other hand, were expected to take a while to progress.
And I have to say Chevy has handled the Buff/Ladd situations poorly, after what I think was an excellent return on the Kane trade. That and goaltending. He never addressed the goaltending.
