As someone who has had more than one concussion through sport, I can tell you that how you feel within the first minute or two after one is MUCH different than how you feel a few minutes later.

I wanted to go back on the field after my first concussion (which I didn't know I had one at the time) because I thought I was fine. My trainer put me through concussion protocol asking me to recite all the months of the year backwards. I completely missed 4 months of the year, but I thought I nailed it.

I still don't know why the trainers let him back on the ice, but I'm definitely not surprised he himself wanted to go back on. A lot of the time when you get a concussion, you feel alright a few minutes after, but much worse in the coming days.
