I may be wrong but didn't the Lightning send him down at 38 games so they won't burn a year of eligibility? So the writing was on the wall that no matter how good he played in the AHL he probably wasn't going to get called up.
I'm all for the player, the team hasn't done anything for him other than draft him. I actually like the idea of him retiring and heading to the KHL like Kovalchuk, come back as a UFA in 2 years.
