CalgaryNext is just trying to serve too many masters. Yes the fieldhouse gets you some $200m in funding, but as far as how much public use you'd get in a shared space? Drop a concert that's bigger than an arena show in there and there's no kids soccer for a week. Stamps would need a practise facility elsewhere, and any other programming on gameday would be a wash.
I'd prefer to see the Flames fund something like the Saitama Super Arena with a community arena attached for the Flames to use as a practise sheet when concerts or football are taking over the main event space. Football would still need a practise space as well. Maybe just across the river in Broadview Park? Build a pedestrian footbridge from Next to the field there for team/community access?
As for King, he'd be very wise to listen to what Kroenke said as one of the key reasons his pitch got picked for the NFL's LA relocation. "lots and lots of pictures"
