You offer a number that works for the current and future salary structure of your team and if the player feels they can get a silly offer in free agency you simply have to let them go. For instance with Russell we know he's not a $4+ million defenseman but you just know that a team or two will offer that to him in free agency. As a GM you need to be able to just say "no" to trying to match that kind of money and finding a replacement from your organizational depth and if your organization lacks the depth to replace a player like Russell I would say you have an issue with scouting and development. You can't keep everyone in a hard salary cap yet that doesn't seem to stop NHL GM's from trying.
I 100% agree I just like that when some players hit the open market, GM's tend to get a little crazy and hand out bad contracts. I don't think Ladd is worth 6x6 but I think he'll get it and whenever bad contracts are given out by other GM's I see it as a good thing for the Flames. Like you said, Russell will likely get a bigger contract so I hope BT is using that while shopping him. Promoting what he'll be worth instead of what he is worth because his perceived value is more than his actual value at this point.

So my original point is that BT should shop now and I hope a team like Arizona, Vancouver or the sharks give a big contract to a guy who doesn't really deserve one.
