I think one thing that is being overlooked in the Stamkos debate is the fact that your gaining a top end asset for free. There is obviously going to be the over-payment factor in that equation. Set his true value at whatever number 6.5M-7.5M. If you end up having to pony up 9.5M to get the player essentially which is basically paying 2-3M per year for that free asset.
Much as the thought pattern the previous few years in taking on a bad contract player for a prospect or pick, this will probably work similar.
If you think Stamkos can continue at a resonable pace for the duration of the contact then you do this bearing you have the cap space and limited "bad contracts" in the system.
