I don't know how he can sue them for libel. I guess he could try, but the decision here said the judge thought they were credible. So nothing here helps him.

Libel from false accusations of pedophilia to family, friends and employer + financial damages, legal fees, damage to reputation and four years of pain and suffering and he could probably throw in a side of PTSD. Sadly he'll probably never collect much of that.
The fact that the Crown in this case seemed overly biased and started crying when the case wasn't going her way, that the original detective investigating this case considered none of Elliot's tweets threatening AND the guy's worst tweet was calling the girl a "Fat A##" shows how crazy this whole case as been.

Elliott’s defence argued that it was an injustice to subject his client to the extra costs related to defending against the Crown’s mistake. He explained to the court that Elliott has already paid him $50,000, is in debt for another $30,000. and that “it’s unlikely he’ll ever be able to repay”. At one point the defence indicated it might be an Abuse of Process to put Elliott into this position.
Ignoring claims of injustice, the Crown argued against the defence’s request. At one point the judge kindly ask her if she was sure about her decision, but she stood unwavering.
Then suddenly, after almost three hours into the day’s hearing, the Crown started crying. She grabbed a tissue from across the table, dabbed her eyes and apologized to the judge saying she was upset over a personal issue.
The judge shut-down the hearing to reconvene on October 6th- the date originally scheduled for the final ruling on Elliott’s innocence or guilt.
Detective Banglid testified in court that Eliott’s tweets were never threatening. One of his alleged victims bragged in court about her vigilante Twitter attacks against people she deems to be “misogynists”. Evidence was introduced into the court that two of the alleged victims spread misinformation that Elliott was a “pedophile”. A large number of Elliott’s tweets used in evidence against him were purely political- what many observers see as protected speech. Elliott’s most offensive tweet was to accuse his alleged victims of having “fat asses”.
The judge also noted a lack of “reasonableness” in Guthrie’s assertion she could expect to use Twitter to make negative comments about Elliott and not be exposed to his response or self defence.

The three women who accused Elliott fit this description perfectly. Christie Blatchford of Canada’s National Post describes how his accusers “convened a meeting of friends to discuss how Elliott should be publicly shamed; they bombarded their followers with furious tweets and retweets about him (including a grotesque suggestion from someone pretending she was a 13-year-old that he was a pedophile); they could and did dish it out.”
Q. But by the time you met Detective Bangild, you already testified to this, you were aware that she was either 18 or 19, agree?
A. Yes.
Q. Right. Good. So not really trying to help out Mr. Elliott when you’re not mentioning the fact it’s actually an adult, right?
A. My position wasn’t really that I wanted ... I was not trying to help Mr. Elliott.
Q. Right.
A. He was stalking me. So no, I wasn’t trying to help me. I wasn’t trying to harm him unduly, but I was not trying to help him and I was not trying to ... yeah.
Q. Right. In your view handing tweets alleging Mr. Elliott’s a pedophile without correcting the officers receiving them, is not trying to harm Mr. Elliott, right?
A. Wasn’t trying to harm him, no.

How there isn't a criminal case against the girls for making false statements and criminal harassment coming out of this is mind boggling. It is a huge failing of our justice system that the case made it court with no fact checking of accusations.
