Now after we're locked into 3-4 years of Trudeau/Notley rule, everyone is finally realizing that the left wing argument of 'tougher GHG regulations will give us the social license to build pipelines' was always and still is complete and utter BS. Obama never gave a crap whether we had a machine that literally ate all the carbon emissions from oilsands crude, KXL was never going to be approved. No amount of 'Sunny Ways' was or is going to matter. Trudeau's going to pretend that working on Energy East and trans mountain are actually fruitful endevours, but he's ultimately going to allow enough roadblocks from the usual sources to get put in front of them to drag along the timeline to effectively kill those projects too. Until the federal government is willing to effectively tell other provinces and first nations to get bent no new tidewater pipelines will ever get built.
Harper's methodology of stacking the regulatory boards and changing the laws to prevent interference and effectively ramming it down the First Nations/BC/Quebec government's throat was the only way these pipelines were ever going to get built. The window for that though given the times and the powers that be has effectively closed.
