Hobart is my second favorite city on the planet (after Calgary). Imagine Victoria and Charlottetown combined, but with a river that leads to the ocean that has one of the deepest natural ports in the world - literally deep enough for US aircraft carriers to float into for shore leave. Tasmania itself is like taking British Columbia, squeezing it into a square and dropping it in the ocean.
Backpacked in Australia on 4 separate occasions and always end up in Hobart, or not wanting to leave Hobart. I even took my wife there to propose.
Great pubs, great artisan market every saturday at the wharf. Awesome restaurants, great wines (if you like Pinot Noirs and Merlots). Cascade Brewery is there. One of Australia's oldest cities.
The tennis club isn't far from the market (if the tourney is where i think it is). I was there one year when Martina Hingis won the tournament, but I didn't catch any matches unfortunately (looking back i was far too interested in the pub scene).
