The difference between Subbans $9M and Kopitars $10M is mostly because the market for centers is higher then d-men right now.
PK Subban likely could have been signed for something like 10 years and $70 million back in 2012, and he'd only be a $7 million cap hit.
Instead he had:
$2 years at $2.875M, and now 8 years with a $9M AAV.
Could potentially have saved $8 Million and a lot of the cap hit over the next 8 years by just avoiding the bridge and signing long term then.
