It is denim that hasn't been washed before sale. This typically creates a uniform fade or rinse. Raw denim skips this step. Initially, raw denim is quite stiff, and depending on the fabric weight, almost feels like cardboard. However, over time, you break the jeans in yourself - your body size, sweat ,and movement - make the jeans fit you and look better than they would from a rinsed pair.
