If Kings re-sign Lucic they've effectively given up on re-signing Toffoli who will command the kind of money only a team with a ton of cap space can afford. Kings, who are in perpetual cap hell, can't afford that.
2017 Flames have a ton of cap space. Rather than lose him to offer sheet we give the the Kings something like Poirier+Frolik+Hickey. A heavy price to pay but it's Tyler Toffoli here.
