I definitely agree with you it made it so he had nothing to go back to. No reason to ever seek forgiveness. Even if he blamed palpatine for it it would only make him pursue the dark side further so he could overthrow him
Episode 3 is pretty good on its own. The other two could have been done far better. I'd even support changing the one line in Jedi of leia remembering her mother to support the chain of events in 3.
Palpatine laying it all on the line betting he knows what's in Anakins heart is great. You could clean up the dialog a bit in 3 but that movies themes is really good.
1 and 2 are brutal though.
