The thing about a sports hernia is that you can play through it and not really do more damage. It impacts your play because it hurts like bloody hell especially after the games or getting up in the morning.

A sports hernia is extremely hard to diagnose and if a player wants to try playing through it it's not something that a doctor or trainer would regularly notice. I would hazard a guess that there is at least 20 players at any given time playing with a sports hernia in the NHL.
