I've always been a sucker for glimpses into the vintage Calgary I grew up in but mostly can't remember because I was too young or it was before my time.
For that reason, I've always loved Superman III, despite it's shortcomings because of the wealth of Calgary locations in the film.
I just came across this really rare and obscure documentary on Superman III from a Spanish source and about mid-way through, there are tons of behind the scenes videos of downtown Calgary in 1981 or 1982 from angles you never see in the film.
Starting at 10:20, there's a great skyscraper shot where you can see the emerging skyline (the Petro Canada/Suncor towers are in progress!). Then there's tons of great street level stuff from around the Bow Valley parkade, Bow Valley Plaza, Esso Plaza, and other places, like the East Village when evil Superman is drinking at the St. Louis, etc. Smallville is also filmed High River and rural Alberta (as was done on Superman I). My buddy's claim to fame is that his wife used to date the boy who played Ricky in this movie!
