I would assume both controllers are made on the cheap. There's always third party of different qualities if one wants to go that route.
I usually didn't start getting a problem with my controller until year 4 or 5. My second one got used a lot less, so I'd just by one replacement and swap out the first one. I'd always get that problem though where pushing a combination of two buttons (like run and jump for instance) would somehow make the controller/machine think I was pushing a third button and my menu would open in the middle of a jump, or my guy would go into a duck or something. Anyone else every have this happen? Happened to both a PS2 controller and PS3 controller of mine.
All in all though, anteing up once every 4-5 years isn't too bad. My x button often got squishy/sticky too.
