I agree with the general sentiment that Lowry did a poor job.
-Virtanen received an absurd amount of prime icetime including powerplays when he produced nothing until his first assist today. That, combined with multiple awful penalties, should have seen him move down the line up instead of up.
-Gauthier and Sanheim were completely under-utilized in my opinion. I thought both of them played very well and should have been moving up the line up throughout the tournament. I couldn't believe that Gauthier wasn't getting out there in the third period. Sanheim was Canada's best defenseman with the puck and I really think that he should have been the go-to D.
-Obviously a lack of discipline cost them. Not only that but it was a little bit embarrassing to see them act so petulently (Strome in particular). The reffing wasn't perfect but it was far from atrocious and not the reason that Canada lost. They had plenty of powerplay opportunities and would have had more if not for idiotic decisions by Virtanen and Marner.
-Marner was sensational in the second half of the game outside of the penalty. I thought that this tournament raised more questions about him than provided answers, but at least today fans got to see the skill make an impact. Too bad he didn't score when he split the D... would have been the goal of the tournament.
-Blackwood may have only let in one very bad goal but he wasn't making saves. McDonald is supposedly the second best U20 goalie in the country, not some no-name backup. It was a mistake to leave Blackwood in the net after goal #4.
-Where was Konecny in the third period? I couldn't tell if he was being benched, or if it was just too many special teams shifts, or if he was simply ineffective after an excellent first and second. Too bad. I like him a lot as a player.
-Bad game for Hickey to have such bad luck. He made a few excellent defensive plays but that trip cost them dearly and a clean pass on the first goal against would have resulted in a 2-0 lead and perfect first period. Not saying he's 100% to blame but fortune was not on his side today.
Too bad Canada lost, but I don't think they were a top-4 team in the tournament so the remaining games should be some excellent hockey.
