The response reads to me like a guy who is concerned about trying to employ sympathy to dissuade people from doing anything to cause him further harm. I didn't give him any money and I have no personal gripe but I can't say i see anything but a guy who consciously took advantage of people. Whatever extenuating circumstances may or may not exist, it is certainly not the behaviour of a straightforward and honest person. Wouldn't trust the guy as far as I could throw one of those shaved and rippling legs.
