I don't think they ever even thought of Stamkos when they traded Kessel. they wanted him out badly. End of story.
As a Leaf hater you should be more concerned about the great prospects they are developing. Two of the NHL's top 10 prospects will join them with or without Stamkos in October. And they'll add another top pick this June.
I'm not seeing how a Stamkos contract will "Cripple" them. I think that Kopitar contract will help cripple the Kings though.
