If those suggestions and rumors are true, then it reads like he doesn't want to be in Calgary much longer.
Having said that though, all the signs point to Johnny enjoying himself, and being grateful that the Flames took a chance on him and gave him opportunities. Obviously it's impossible to know the room dynamics and off-ice relationships, but it appears from tidbits in social media that Johnny gets along with many of the guys, including (and probably most importantly) Monahan.
Furthermore, I don't think many players opt for shorter term if a club is offering long term or max term, just so they can drive up their dollar value in their 2nd or 3rd contracts. That is risky business, even for a budding superstar like Johnny. Injury, drop in play/desire, off-ice issues that lead to a drop in play are all possibilities for any player, including stars. All the mega stars of the league have inked max term contracts. In my opinion, a player would choose the guaranteed salary over an 8 year term if it's offered to him over the CHANCE he might earn an extra million or two over two separate contracts.
