Rest assured, the 23-year-old Ferland has been well-versed in how a daughter can wrap a father around her little finger.

“I’ve talked to the guys like Mason (Raymond), guys with girls on the team, and they say it’s totally different with a boy and a girl,” Ferland said, with a grin the size of the Rocky Mountains coming across his face.

“I’ve been with Kayleigh since high school and put her through a lot, but we’re both really excited.

Being a dad himself, head coach Bob Hartley knows that feeling, but it’s not just Ferland’s pending fatherhood that makes Hartley ecstatic for him.

It was a couple of years ago when Hartley saw all the signs the young forward sidelined at the time due to a knee injury had a drinking problem, and called him into his office to confront him.

When Ferland admitted he needed help, the Flames sent him to rehab.

Ferland celebrated one year of sobriety last March, was a big force in the club’s run to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and is walking on air these days about the changes in his life. He’s not alone in that regard.

“The transformation of this young man is night and day. It’s unbelievable. I’m very proud of him,” Hartley beamed. “I meet with Ferly every day and we do video, but we also talk about life.
