I hate the whole PC argument of why there's a female lead as the force user. They wanted to have the love interest angle so each lead needs a role.
If you want to be cynical about it consider that all boys like Star Wars so creating another swashbuckling Disney princess in Rey allows them to market Star Wars to girls and boys.
