Why isn't that she is just a "youngling" that Luke found for his Academy an option? I assume at some point Luke was able to identify children who were force sensitive without the need for a midi-chlorian counter. That would explain why Kylo is familiar with her from his time at the Academy with Luke. She probably was traumatized by whatever Kylo did at the Academy and pushed all of the memories away.
