I don't know if shes his sister or what, but I think it's pretty obvious he knows who she is and wasn't very interested in killing her.

I thought the sequences from earlier showed she was maybe a pupil of Luke's Jedi Academy, and she was relocated to a safe place once Kylo started to turn to dark. At least that was my impression of it. Her reaction to the light saber, I thought was just due to some early training prior to the Jedi Academy shutting down.
