All in the Family was about as liberal a show as you'll ever see. It was created explicitly to show the generation gap between the with-it young people (Michael and Gloria) and the grouchy old fossil (Archie). The whole point of the show was to highlight contemporary social issues the television had been too conservative to touch (racism, abortion, women's liberation, homosexuality), with bigot Archie as the rhetorical punching bag. The subtlety of the writing, and Carroll O'Connor's performance, saved the show from being simply a progressive polemic.
