The 3.5mm jack has been around for decades, and is fairly limited in terms innovating on it, without changing it too much. Apple using the Lightning connector allows them to do a
lot more with the audio. Rather than sticking with 2 channel audio, they could create legit surround sound headphones using the lightning connector, add more speakers to the headphones to offer more channels of audio. Hell, they could get creative with the headphones as well, maybe toss in a couple batteries in the headphones as well, so when it's plugged into the iPhone, it can offer additional power to the iPhone. Or maybe a VR headset add-on? I'm sure there'll be some additional accessories that can be built on top of the headphone by tying it into the lighting connector.
That being said, that would be a
huge change for me. I've spent my fair share of money on good headphones, which I use with my iPhone constantly. So it'd really suck to have to use them with an adapter.
