Probably a discussion for another thread, but...
The NHL failed with the draft system. They should've taken care of this problem way before McDavid (as if 3 #1 picks in a row wasn't bad enough) but didn't, they tip toed around with minor tweaks to the odds, and it resulted in yet another morbidly comical result, as you put it. They didn't have the guts to put firm rules in place to limit the number of first overall picks teams can have within a several year span. The system needed a complete revamp, and frankly if that left the Oilers out of the McDavid sweepstakes, so be it.
My point is, if the NHL is after credibility they certainly have a way of diminishing it themselves, so I have no problems with the fans making a further joke of things.
