Teams that win in this league have super stars.
Really? Three of the last five SC champions had basically no offensive superstars.

Bruins 2011: Lucic with 62 points was their most productive forward. They had very strong D core with Chara and Boychuk, elite goaltending, plus the effective one-two punch playoffs combo in Bergeron and Krejci. No superstars in that team.

Kings 2012 and 2014: Same as above, built a strong D core around Doughty and had their one-two punch in Kopitar and Carter. Elite goaltending. Both Gaborik and Richards were post-apex players, no superstars in that team.

I think the Flames may have their future Bergeron-Krejci / Kopitar-Carter combo in Bennett and Monahan (or possibly Jankowski). But there are three things that separate those teams from the current Flames squad.

1) Goaltending (obviously)

2) They were big and physical teams

3) Our dcore is almost entirely all about offense. It's not going to work in the long run without what those teams had in Boychuk, Mitchell or Greene.

Wotherspoon and Sielloff are struggling to to adapt their game to the senior level and Hickey is still 2-3 years away. That's why IMO the Flames should be all over trading for Hamonic.
