There are guides online and I'd suggest you use them for some of the technical gameplay elements which the game might explain to you but does so in a very quick manner (ex - it took me a couple attempts at fighting and reading the tutorial to get all the controls down since the tutorial pops up in the top-right corner when enemies appear).
Past that though, the game basically shoves you in face first into a world where you can do what you want. It's a traditional Bethesda game in this sense: there are no guidelines. The game is about exploring a world. You can completely ignore the story a great deal and make it your own post-apocalyptic version of Sim City or go on raider murder sprees. And you can opt to ignore all sense and engage raiders in power armour with a pipe pistol (personal experience: it can be done...it just takes time and tactics).
I'm not there yet, but I've been told many times that the endgame does have branching endings to a small degree. I'm not sure the game warns you at all (ala Fallout New Vegas, where the game gives you distinct warnings that starting a certain mission will cause all other factions to stop working with you and therefore lock out their possible ending), but watch out for that. You could refer to guides if you'd like for that.
