We'll never know why for sure but I remember hearing at the time that other teams picking in the 20th-40th overall position were really high on Jankowski as well. If the flames knew this and we're determined to get him, it would explain why they would take him with their first round pick. I don't think anyone would have criticized this pick the time if he was taken 35th overall by someone with their second pick.
Either way, the flames have been patient in their development with him and if he turns into an impactful NHLer, both the time invested and the first round pick will have been worth it.
