He thought he had the votes to stay. 5 votes against him prior tribal... so he thought there might be 4 against him this time so he steals the obvious vote against him (Joe) meaning that there would be three max... my guess is that Spencer was supposed to vote for Abi. That way if Joe had an idol Abi would go home on the revote, if Joe didn't have an idol then Joe goes home on the revote.

So to answer your question "what just happened tonight??"... Spencer flipped is what happened.
