The Color Commentator mentioned that because Maclin was moving forward when he went out of bounds the clock would stop. He'd seen many other situations where the player was either going sideways or backwards and they kept the clock running because he gave himself up.
Personally I think the players should be allowed to get out of bounds to stop the clock and that the NFL needs to allow it, even if the player is moving backwards. Sure he's giving himself up...he's also trying to preserve time. Whats next if a running back intentionally drops a 4 yard dump off pass in the middle of the field they'll keep the clock running because they purposefully did it to stop the clock?
