Lets ignore the fact that it seems to be a CBA grey area whether or not you can retain salary on contracts that are not in effect yet. (I seriously doubt you can, but I can't find any wording in the CBA that would explicity forbid it)
Russell's next contract will reportedly start at $4mil/year. If Flames retain 50% of Russell's next contract to obtain Hamonic you make Hamonic's effective cap hit to the Flames as $5.857 million +. Then you are also giving them Hudler.
