The isles get 3 years of Russell at a great cap hit, Russell gets the contract he wants and the Flames get Hamonic. Flames might have to throw in Hudler or something though.
Congratulations, you just destroy one of the main things that makes Hamonic so valuable - his cap hit for his performance.

Lets ignore the fact that it seems to be a CBA grey area whether or not you can retain salary on contracts that are not in effect yet. (I seriously doubt you can, but I can't find any wording in the CBA that would explicity forbid it)

Russell's next contract will reportedly start at $4mil/year. If Flames retain 50% of Russell's next contract to obtain Hamonic you make Hamonic's effective cap hit to the Flames as $5.857 million +. Then you are also giving them Hudler.

d-core has the following cap hit for next season:
$6.75
$5.75
$5.25
$4.65
$3.5
$2.9
$5.857+

$34.657 million+ in cap space dedicated towards the d-core.
