By this coming out it weakens the Islanders' position in trades and it sounds like Hamonic didn't tell his teammates yet and wants to explain it first before he comments on it (i.e. doesn't sound like a guy who wanted it to leak)

If the request came before the season as per your OP, and talks have been going on for 6+ weeks, even before the season started, I think the Isles already are in a position of weakness, as they've exhausted most possibilities through the usual behind the scenes channels, with nobody meeting the price.
They (and or the agent, who are the usual leaky sources that insiders like Dreger use and get used by) now just want to get this over and done with as soon as possible/before Christmas, so let it out for public consumption. As said, pressuring a team that they are close in trading with, or opening it up to a bunch of trades for a potential 3 way deal.
This is now going to cause a distraction to the team and the player, so I think this is a calculated risk by the Isles and/or the agent to push this issue to conclusion rather then being stuck in limbo.
