I think it is more likely one of the teams talking to the Islanders leaked it and the Western Canada thing is just a natural assumption to make if the reason he wants out is personal.
By this coming out it weakens the Islanders' position in trades and it sounds like Hamonic didn't tell his teammates yet and wants to explain it first before he comments on it (i.e. doesn't sound like a guy who wanted it to leak)
