Which is still not the same thing as giving up a core player off your existing roster.

They were all thought of as
future core roster pieces. Nobody expected them to step in and be core players right away.
Furthermore, when you trade a pick, you don't even know what player that pick will turn into. It might be a guy that the team acquiring the pick sees as a future core player, but that would not fill the same level of need on your team.
Anyway, my point stands: When you trade a pick, you are not giving up a core player off your roster. At most, you are giving up the potential of adding a core player in the future – which is not the same thing.
