They were all thought of as future core roster pieces. Nobody expected them to step in and be core players right away.

Furthermore, when you trade a pick, you don't even know what player that pick will turn into. It might be a guy that the team acquiring the pick sees as a future core player, but that would not fill the same level of need on your team.

Anyway, my point stands: When you trade a pick, you are not giving up a core player off your roster. At most, you are giving up the potential of adding a core player in the future – which is not the same thing.
