The rough start aside, going into the season Gio was regarded as a top 5 dman in the league. Correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty sure that's worth more than a 20 goal forward to basically any NHL gm (Duchene has never hit 30). The only thing that offsets that is the age factor. But Colorado is in need of strength on their backend, so that diminishes that a bit, especially if they view their team as on the upswing in the next few seasons.
You either don't comprehend the value of top pairing d-men in this league or seriously undervalue Gio if you think that Colorado wouldn't consider that offer.
If Gio returned to form it would be a slam dunk for Colorado in the first 2-3 years, who are already ripe with talent up front.
