The problem with waiting to deal your pending UFAs is what if they get hurt, you're left in a Cammalleri-type situation where no one wants to pay top dollar for a guy who is injured or who may not be 100% following his injury.
Each player and each trade decision should and will be approached on their own merits.
If you're Brad Treliving and you've been listening to offers for Russell for the last year and they haven't changed, I would pull the trigger now just to avoid the problem of 'what do we do if he's hurt'.
If the team was in the mix still it would be a different story, but the Flames aren't exactly looking to preserve the current status quo when it comes to results, so there's no harm in upsetting the apple cart by dealing away a guy like Russell or Hudler.
