We booked this flight on Aeroplan initially through Vancouver but AC decided to cancel all their Hawaii flights for some reason durring our departure so we got routed through LAX there and SFO back.

If the pricing was the same, I dont think I would ever travel through Vancouver again especially with a small child. The 2 hour/4 hour flights through SFO are great little flights.

Also +1 for United Economy plus, paid 30$ US per seat each way on the OGG routings in advance with seats D and F and had the middle unoccupied each time since our little guy was a lap baby.
This.

Last time we went, we had YYC-YVR-LAX-OGG (yikes!), and OGG-LAX-YYC, just because there was not much available, and that was all we could get without paying over $1000/person.

I hated it. Not just because of the 2 stops on the way there. That wasn't even so bad.

It was the long walk through YVR...it seemed like we went up two levels, and then down again, plus an extra security check, it just seemed endless.

And LAX is just...LAX. The terminal change between AC and UA is just terrible. For such a large airport, you'd think they would have a train going between the airside of the terminals, like at FRA or DFW. Nope. You have to exit the airport entirely, and wait for a terminal connections bus that may take up to 10 minutes to come. Then go up to the departures level, check in, and clear security again. Its just a nightmare.

We've flown through SFO before, and its much better. Unless you're having to spend $200/person more, avoid the LAX routing at all costs. In fact, fly WestJet if you can, and get the non-stop flight from YYC.
