Only thing I'd point out is often people like to make a comparison Maui / Kauai / Hawaii (Big Island) / Honolulu (Waikiki) which isn't really valid. The whole island of Oahu actually has a ton of stuff and Oahu isn't just Honolulu/Waikiki. The North Shore rivals the beauty on a lot of Maui. Windward is amazing as well, South (which is Waikiki) can get boring and touristy, and Leeward has a lot to offer especially as you get towards Makaha and Kaena Point (back on North Shore).

But not intending to take away from your post which was excellent! Makes me want to book a flight tonight.
For me Oahu is a thing unto itself. I never would not want to visit at least once for alot of the things it has on it like Pearl Harbour, North Shore, Japanese temple, people watching etc but with a small child I would never consider it over Maui.

Now if a trip to Hawaii is only a once in a lifetime trip for a person, then I would suggest Oahu with a 3 day trip to Maui as you can kind of see all the Maui highlights in 3 full days (if you dont drive hana, which I still havent done).

I will definately go at least once more with my kid(s) to Oahu so they can experience it but for a relaxing vaca with a small kid then I would recommend Maui over Oahu for sure.

Keep in mind binge drinking trips to Mexico, Cuba, DR, etc have no appeal to me whatsoever so Hawaii, Costa Rica, Barbados, Martinique are more my ideas of "beach" vacations.
