Would you trade a 2nd to get him back right now? I still wouldn't, but I might think about it. Would I trade Hunter Smith to get him back? Probably but not everyone would.

Interesting way of looking at it but I think you answered your own question. If you wouldn't trade a 2nd for Berra now, after substantial improvement, there is no way we didn't want that trade. Who we picked isn't really relevant as it is a byproduct of the trade, not the trade itself. If we picked the next Gaudreau with that pick it wouldn't have made the initial trade more of a steal IMO.
Personally, I wouldn't trade Smith for Berra mainly because I think trading assets for backup goalies is a bad move. If we were to trade a guy like Smith, I would prefer he was packaged up with other assets for a legitimate starter or at least a guy who has real potential to be one.
