Not just the goaltending but because of the post expansion and no eastern bloc players, the talent level on most teams was thin.

Basically you would have a top two lines and then 6 guys that were bear league players and cement heads.

On defense the bottom 2 probably couldn't skate backwards.

Goaltending was horrendous.

Also players usually played 2 minute shifts with a lower level of fitness, so line match up's became huge.

As much as people think that the 80's were the glory days of offensive hockey. It was the era of slap shots from the boards and the blueline beating un screened goalies.

the game shifted in the late 80's because of teams like Edmonton and Calgary who were incredibly deep teams. But then you had teams like Hartford and others who could barely ice a competent lineup.
