Let's say he puts up another 47 this year to make it to 530, that means he needs 364 goals at the age of 30. He could play another 10-12 seasons, and only needs to average 32-36 goals to make it there. He's been quite durable over the years, and Europeans often have longevity in their careers (Jagr, Hasek, Lidstrom, Fedorov, Larionov). I think if he keeps putting up 50-60 for the next few seasons and is in arms reach of Gretzky's total he will do whatever it takes to beat the record.
As someone who does hold all of Gretzky's numbers in high regard I would love to see one of major records fall, otherwise it may never happen. I just wish Ovechkin hadn't of missed time during the lockout, I'd think with an extra 70 goals tacked on he could have hit 1,000 goals for all we know. And I know Gretzky missed time in the 1995 lockout, but he wasn't scoring at nearly the same rate then.

I love watching Ovi score at a torrid pace and it pisses me off a lot that he sat through two lockouts as well. Easily another 50 goals, up to 60 or maybe 70 that he is missing. Iggy is my all time favorite player, so ditto for him. When Iggy finally hangs em up, he'll be counted among the legends of the game IMO and it sucks because he probably could have had an extra 50 as well.
I doubt Ovi beats out Wayne's goals record, but the fact that he is going to get close playing from 2005-20xx whereas Wayne played from 1979 to 1999 is (to me) is even more impressive.
Basically for my money, if Ovi finishes 2nd all time in goals, he will be the greatest goal scorer of all time. If he finishes first, (even after two lockouts) well then by golly that man is simply something else.
