Notebook problem here.

I have an Acer Travelmate 2310. Got it for christmas last year from the parents. Not the greatest machine but gets the job done when it comes to school.

Anyways, The CD-ROM drive has completely died on me after very minimal usage. When I am logged onto XP and press the drive button to open it up there is no response. No whirring, no light. Nothing.

However, when I log off XP or turn the computer off/restart it. The drive pops open regardless of whether or not I pressed the button when it was turned on/logged on.

I've tried 10s of DVDs/CDs and each time I get nothing when I insert a new disc and log back on. Nothing comes up in "My Computer" showing the presence of a working drive (my ROM drive has only ever shown up in My Computer when it was functioning and there was a disc inside my machine)

I've tried pressing the "manual open" button (the do-hickey where u put a pin through the small hole to open it up automatically) and then putting a disc in while logged onto XP as well and it's never worked either.

Obviously, I'm not a tech guy in the least. I can work my way around machines pretty well when they're healthy but when a problem like this comes up I am completely lost. I really can't grasp why it opens when logged off but not otherwise.

I was thinking of re-installing Windows in the hope that the driver might fix itself somehow that way but because the laptop was a gift I am unaware of whether it came with an XP disc (my parents don't seem to think so but cannot remember for sure)

Anyways enough rambling from me. Hopefully I've given enough info to give some kind soul an idea of what's going on with my machine.

Any thoughts/input is extremely appreciated. Cheers.
