One hates to think this way, but it's true. The US has ran false pretences before to get the narrative they want, to go ahead with whatever undertaking it is they need to secure resources/area.
WMDs in Iraq, gulf of Tonkin, the aforementioned incidents. I wouldn't put it past them.
The thing that bothers me is off the hop we were being told two different stories from both east and west media. The whole thing stinks, and the fact that nation states will, or are capable of playing tiddily winks with hundreds of innocent lives over oil/money/area to influence public perception is sickening.
