I think the media makes a bigger deal about it than it really should be. It's just a requirement of the CBA.
For a player who isn't an established NHLer, the team has to pay for him to stay in a hotel until he has been on the roster for a certain period of time/number of games. Once that time has passed (or any time prior to that), the team has to tell the player to find a place, which essentially means, "we're not paying for your hotel any more".
Also, the other sports aren't really set up the same with the Major Pro, Minor Pro, and Major Amateur structure that hockey has. If you're in the NBA or NFL, you can't be sent back to college if you're not doing well in the pros like a junior-eligible hockey player can be sent back to the CHL.
