Just to add to the white gear talk, aside from potentially disorienting a hurried shooter between pads/netting, couldn't another aside also be for "battle scars"? I never wore white pads, but one of the reasons I liked white tape on my goalie stick was to see all those puck marks. Felt like war wounds to me or something, I liked it.

Stealth edit: And especially a white knob (insert joke here), I learnt that the hard way growing up. When you're playing at a level that doesn't have instant replay, sometimes in goal mouth scrambles if a ref briefly sees a small, black object in the net, he may call it a goal WHEN IT WAS TOTALLY THE KNOB OF MY STICK!!! Not that I've experienced that frustration or anything...goalies, don't use black tape for the knob.
