It's not that he's a whipping boy but he's a guy that's deal expires as the end of the season and IMO at least would not be worth the raise he's going to expect in free agency. He's easy to move because of his contract status and if this team needs forward help he's the logical choice to be included in a big deal. If they can move Wideman then great but the chances of that happening with another year on his deal isn't nearly as good.
