Yes, you're confusing it with GoT.
The Walking Dead tv show and comics have always existed in different continuities, but there has also been a link between them. Some characters exist on one and not the other and some characters die much earlier in the storyline in one than the other. Some storylines exist in only one or the other; or are changed significantly from the comic to the tv show.
To give you some idea, in the comics, the group arrived at Alexandria in Issue #69, which came out in January 2010. The current issue is #147, so there have been more issues of the comics after their arrival at Alexandria than before.
