Hollywood does not kill off a beloved character of 6 long seasons, and miss cashing in on any of the emotional payday that his friends'/wife's reaction would provide. It's one thing to kill off protagonists, but you don't do it without getting as many viewer's tears as possible.
Having said that, if that was his death, I'll have more respect for this show than ever.

When he doesn't return with Rick, they're going to assume he's dead, and it will be emotional. They may never confirm it, but as the days and weeks drag on, Maggie will know. That could provide emotional impact for the rest of the season if done right. Not everything has to be slammed in their faces with a samurai sword or a baseball bat, sometimes people just disappear, especially with tens of millions of zombies just roaming around.
A main character's death doesn't have to be epic, sometimes things can just go wrong. The lesson this season has been pushing is: Don't take any chances. That's exactly what Glenn did when he let Nick live and when he tried to save/fix him. He screwed himself with his own good intentions, all for a high risk/low reward proposition. Best case, Nick becomes a contributing member of the group, worst case he gets people killed. Well, the worst happened and it's 100% on Glenn. Obviously, he wasn't thinking 'risk vs reward', he was just wanting to be a good guy and do the right thing... something that has been proven time and time again to get people killed in a ZA.
I liked it personally, for a zombie death it was as good as one could expect for a main character. Not every main character needs to die at the hands of a sadistic madman, sometimes a zombie (or 300) will suffice. I was speechless when it happened, it was one of the second most impactful death for me to date. Most impactful would have to be Lori for me. I almost cried and I didn't like Lori at all, and I literally never cry when watching movies/tv.
At least this was far, far better than the deaths of Dale, Andrea, Tyrese and Beth. Dale and Tyrese went out like chumps. Andrea was so dumb it almost wrecked season 3 for me with how stupid she was. Beth's death was the culmination of the most boring story-arch to date (the hospital).
Glenn didn't deserve better, he got exactly what he deserved. They foreshadowed like crazy that Nick would be his undoing, and it happened. There is no way in hell they are bringing him back, that would be like trying to get the toothpaste back into the tube.
